Tech rant time.
So I recently bought a new ASUS laptop with Windows 8. Since I had no use for Windows on my old desktop, I set up a dual boot with Linux Mint 15.
To install system updates in Windows 8, I have to:
- Wait for the updates to download
- Shut down Windows
- Wait another 10 minutes while it “configures updates” at the boot screen
- Restart the computer (Which can take some time, considering the hard drive on my laptop runs at 5400 RPM.)
- More “configuring updates”, this time for only about 30 seconds
And then I’m finally at my lockscreen.
For Mint 15, I have to:
- Wait for the updates to download
- Open the Update Center
- Click the Install button
And that’s it. No rebooting, I can go back to whatever I was doing as soon as I hit the install button.
From what I’ve read, this has been a feature in all Linux distros for quite a while. Microsoft might just learn a thing or two from a FREE operating system.
That being said, I still like my laptop and Windows 8 is actually surprisingly useful. It’s a bit of a learning curve from Windows 7, but it’s not impossible to learn.
